The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is two vintage coffee pots purchased for $1 each and sold for...

I love vintage kitchen items.  I don't actually cook (in fact, I dream of having a personal chef), but I like the idea of having a kitchen filled with funky finds.  Frome orange bread warmers to Fire King mugs, some people definitely collect this stuff!

A few weeks ago I picked up two vintage coffee pots: an orange Poly Perk and a glass Pyrex.

I go to a lot of yard sales, and I'd never seen either of these at any of the sales I'd visited.  So I figured they would be of interest to eBay buyers.  These coffee pots cost me a buck a piece.

Here's the Poly Perk which sold for.....

$24.99!

And here's the Pyrex pot which sold for.......

$19.99!

(OK.  Not the greatest picture, but you get the idea!)

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a Ralph Lauren sweater purchased for $2 and sold for..

Ralph Lauren is always hot.  But Ralph Lauren sweaters with American flags on them are really hot!  I've sold quite a few patriotic Ralph Lauren sweaters and tops -- even ones that were popular 20 years ago!

Last week I sold an RL sweater that was purchased for $2.  It was new with tags, and it sold to someone in Europe for ...

$49.99

Not bad!

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a Kate Spade purse purchased for $5 and sold for ...

Last weekend we went to a yard sale and picked up a Kate Spade purse for $5.  (It was featured in my yard sale roundup.)  I made sure to ask the lady where she bought it.  I told her I sell on eBay and could get in big trouble if it wasn't real.  She claimed that she had purchased it for her daughter at an authentic Kate Spade store while on vacation.  Her daughter didn't like it.  I was satisfied with that.  What reason did she have to lie?

When I got home, I had Tasha search the Internet for verification that we had an authentic Kate Spade on our hands.  We found several websites that helped us out.

It smelled just a tad like perfume, so I listed it as used once. It looked new, but I wasn't absolutely sure that it was new, so I decided to be very cautious.

Today it sold to someone in Canada for....

$89.99

And that's a score...for sure!

Remember:  It's OK to sell brand name purses, just be very careful.  Make sure you ask the person from whom you are purchasing the purse whether or not it's authentic or not.  Thereafter, verify that it is authentic by looking up the "signs" of an authentic purse on the Internet.

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a MUZZY BBC language program purchased for $20 and sold for..

One of my former night school students, Tasha, has been working for me lately.  Originally, I hired her to list inexpensive items, but she's now listing just about anything.  It's amazing.  She just turned 18, and she's very computer savvy.

I just seem to get more done when I'm paying someone to help me list.  When they're at my house, I feel like I'm wasting money if I don't have my act in gear, and I make the most of every minute.

Last Sunday Tasha decided to go to yard sales with me and thank goodness she did!  There were only a handful of sales, but we still scored. At one of the better sales, we bought MUZZY, the BBC language program for children which features a bear of the same name.  The program came with DVD's and CD's + 2 bears.  I had never heard of MUZZY and was not about to fork over $40 for something about which I knew absolutely nothing.  But Tasha kept insisting that the MUZZY character was very popular on BBC, and she was convinced the language DVD's would sell for quite a bit.

After thinking about it, I told the seller that I had an eBay store and would only be willing to pay $20.  She wouldn't budge on the price.

A few minutes later, another man offered her $30, but she still wouldn't lower the price.

The seller insisted I use her laptop to see how much I could get for the program on eBay.  (I didn't have my iPhone with me.)  She was confident I would make money by buying it for $40.  I did a simple completed listing search which showed that the highest price anyone had paid for the program was $66.00.  I explained to her that if I were to purchase it for $40, I wouldn't be making very much if it ended up selling.

I could tell she was starting to cave.  It was the second day of the sale, and she was ready close shop.  As I was walking away, she changed her mind.  But I still wasn't sure if I'd scored.

When I got home, I noticed that there weren't many Spanish MUZZY language courses for sale on eBay, and my set was the only one that included two stuffed MUZZY bears.

I decided to list everything at a fixed price of $99.99 -- no free shipping since I really didn't have any competition.  Well, guess what.  It sold in less than 48 hours to someone in California.  Wow!  Thanks, Tasha!  I think it's time for a raise....

The eBay Life Blog "Score of the Day" is a pair of Frye boots purchased for $2 and sold for..

A while back we purchased a pair of Frye boots for $2 at a yard sale.  Boots are hot, and I know Fryes are expensive, but I wasn't sure if these relatively unattractive boots would sell for much.  If nothing else, I figured a farmer could buy them and wear them out to the barn.

Well, I got home and did some research.  Wow!  What a score!

Recently, I've noticed a lot of hipsters wearing them.  A similar pair was even featured on the eBay homepage.
Anyhoo, I purchased these for $2 and sold them at a fixed price for .......

$150!!!

(Now that's what I'm talking about!)

So be on the lookout for beat down boots with the word "Frye" on them.  You won't regret it!

eBay Selling While on Vacation! The eBay Life Score of the Day is a pair of women's shoes in the shape of cars purchased for $6 and sold for...

While we were in Portland, we visited some incredibly awesome thrift shops.  They were pricey, but they also had high-end products.

A few days after getting back from Portland, I listed these awesome car shoes.  I looked them up, and they are going for about $160 retail.  $160!!!!  They have leather bottoms and are made in Spain.  They sold almost immediately.  I almost didn't buy them.  I'm so glad I did.

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a pair of women's designer car shoes by Zalo purchased for $6.00 and sold for ......

$93!!!

Definitely a score!

eBay Selling Tip of the Day: Vote Morris for President!

OK.  So this is a great story.  Right before summer school ended, I went to lunch a local Mexican restaurant with my buddies from the adult school. My friend Lisa and I decided to walk there to get some exercise.  On the way to the restaurant, we came across a yard sale. It was a Thursday, and I was very surprised to find one.

Lisa is interested in selling on eBay, so she decided to watch me at work to see what I bought.  Well, the only thing of interest I found was a Morris for President pin.  "Why would anyone want that?" she asked.  Well, I go to A LOT of yard sales, and I'd never seen one, so I figured it was somewhat collectible.  It only cost a quarter.

This morning it sold for $10.  So lunch that day didn't cost me anything!  (FYI:  It took me 5 minutes to list and package the pin.)

And that's what eBay's about.  I just wish the execs at eBay would focus on making eBay the world's biggest and best yard sale in the world..not another Amazon.  I've started to sell on Amazon, too, but for the most part, I can't sell the type of items on Amazon that I can on eBay.  People go to eBay to find Morris the Cat memorabilia, vintage board shorts, and used shoes - they don't go to Amazon to purchase these products.  And that's what makes eBay special!

Gotta go now!  For more eBay selling tips and tricks, sign up for email updates in the upper lefthand corner of this blog.  For eBay tutoring and such, send me an email at Bluefrogshoes@live.com!

FYI: The Raiders sweatshirt was very popular and sold the first week!

Remember the cool and stylish 1989 flourescent Raider's sweatshirt I purchased last week for $4?  The one from when the Raiders were in L.A.?  It was a hit!

Final price for this lovely piece was ...........

$53!!

It sold to someone in Bakersfield, but someone in Australia bid on it as well!  11 watchers total!  (Update:  She loved it!)

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a Starbucks United States of America mug purchased for a quarter and sold for...

Remember the Starbucks USA mug I purchased last fall?  It sold!  When I listed it, there was one other mug like it on eBay.  That mug sold at auction for around $24. At that point, I decided to list mine for a high price because I was the only one on eBay who had it.  I let it sit and sit until someone in Germany purchased it for.....

$75!

Not bad!

The eBay Life Score of the Day is a pair of $200+ John Fluevog shoes purchased for $4 and sold for....

Last weekend we stopped at a yard sale by the park.  It was pretty pricey.  The shoes were $4 a pair!

Nevertheless, I decided to be a big spender and take a chance on some purple and green Mary Janes that looked quite interesting. They were colorful and clunky "John Fluevogs."  I'd never heard of this brand.  (Shocking, isn't it?)  But if you want to be a successful eBay seller, you have to take chances.

They looked a bit like Doc Martens.  I try to avoid Docs unless I get them dirt cheap.  They cost a fortune new, but they just don't sell for much on eBay.  But since the woman having the sale was selling quite a few high-end items, I decided throw caution to the wind.

She also had a pair of John Fluevog boots, but she wanted $20 for those.  $20 for a pair of boots at a yard sale?  I was feeling lucky....but not that lucky.  So I didn't buy them - a decision I would soon regret.

When I got in the car, I used the eBay iPhone app to do some research.  Fluevogs appeared to be hot, but I couldn't find the exact shoes I'd purchased.  I should have used the Terapeak app because when I got home, I discovered these purple beauties were worth $75. The boots I didn't buy were worth ........well, let's not talk about that.

Luckily, the completed listings I found mentioned a style name.  I made sure to include the style name in the title of the listing I created for these shoes.  I decided to list them for quite a bit more than the going rate since I was the only one on eBay who had them.  (I've been doing that a lot lately.)

And they sold.  In fact, they sold in less than 24 hours.  Pretty amazing, isn't it?  I'm guessing an eBay buyer had a "saved search" set up for these exact shoes.  The girl who bought them lives in Canada.  She emailed me to let me know that she owns another pair of Fluevogs in this style but that she'd never seen purple and green ones.

After sending off the shoes, I looked up John Fluevog on Wikipedia.  Somebody had written an extremely interesting article about him.  Here's the link:  article about John Fluevog.  According to the article, Fluevog has quite a history, and many celebrities have worn his shoes.  At  one point, he even collaborated with the Doc Martens brand.  Crazy!

So here they are.  The eBay Life Score of the Day is a used pair of John Fluevog Mary Janes purchased for $4 and sold for....

   $125!!!!

The eBay Life Score of the Day is a Tag Heuer watchband, purchased for $1 and sold for....

So I decided to do an experiment.  It was Sunday, and it was 5:30 p.m.  I'd been listing all afternoon and needed to get out. The weather was great, and I was itchin' to shop.

The only place open was a place I try to avoid.  It's overpriced and under clean. Back in the day, it was a supermarket.  It's like a big dirty supermarket filled with junk.

Now don't get me wrong.  I'm OK with dirty. But if it's gonna be dirty, it better be cheap -- and this place definitely ain't cheap.

So here's what I had in mind.  The shop was about to close.  I thought it would be fun to see how much money I could make in the last 10 minutes of the day.  I decided to focus on footwear.  And I have to say, things went pretty well.

10 minutes after starting this little game, I was at the front counter ready to check out.  I had gone through the shoes and picked out the money makers.  I ended up with three pairs, and two of them were 50% off!

The first ones I purchased were Stuart Weitzman boots in excellent condition.  They had absolutely no scuffs or uneven wear to the heels and appeared to be made of calf.  I listed them for $89.99 obo.  They should sell for at least $69 or so if I'm patient.  I priced them a little high, but I've been getting more than the going rate for a lot of my products.  Not sure if that has to do with the fact that I'm finally a Top-Rated Seller or what.

They're a good size (7.5) and probably retailed for around $400.  Two people are already watching them.  Since it's March, these might take a while to sell, but I'm willing to wait.  At 5 cents a month, I don't mind.  (Update 4/4/11:  I took an offer of $45 -- still pretty good as I decided to flip them as fast as possible instead of waiting until next fall.)

Next, I found a pair of Ros Hommerson women's sandals in a size 11WW.  I jumped for joy!  I love the size 11WW because it's impossible to find.  They retail for about $80.  They were in perfect shape so I listed them at $24.99.  They shouldn't take long to sell since it's almost spring -- no best offer on these.  11 double wide is an extremely hard size to find, and these were probably worn once.  (Update:  They already sold to someone in Canada -- like before I could post this!  I think I will list them at $29.99 next time!)

Finally, I picked up a pair of Born sandals that retail for around $80.  They were in pretty good condition and should bring in about $19.99, especially since summer is right around the corner!  Had they been more attractive, I would have priced them higher.  (Update:  They already sold for $19.99 -- again, before I could post this.)

Total cost for all three pairs?  $11.50.  Total profit after all is said and done?  I'm guessing around $80.  (Update 4.4.11 -- I ended making almost $70)  Total time it took me to drive to the thrift shop, pick up inventory, list and eventually ship all three pairs?  About an hour.  Hey, that's almost $80 an hour.  (OK.  I ended up making almost $70 -- still pretty good for having fun!)

I'd like to point out that although I live in a nice little college town, the area is not known for it's wealth (to say the least). So don't think you can't go out and score.  It's easy to do when you know how to do it.

When I purchased these shoes, I was pretty confident they would sell because I'd sold these brands before.  When it comes to eBay, experience matters.  It definitely does.  So get out there and get some experience!  But before you do, check out my "Score of the Day."

I read a lot of blogs and listen to quite a few eBay-related podcasts.  That's how I learn about new products.  I've actually been trying to find more items to sell at auction.  In general, shoes are not good auction items.  One of the podcasts I listen to happened to mention watchbands, so when I saw one at a yard sale, I decided to pick it up.

It was in good shape, and it was a Tag Heuer.  Tag Heuer watches are extremely pricey.  I picked it up for $1.  I wasn't sure how much it was worth, but for $1, I had nothing to lose.

So I got home and looked it up on Terapeak.  Sure enough, it was worth around $60.  So I decided to be daring and list it at auction for a starting price of $9.99.

The bidding started early (always a good sign) and before I knew it, it was up to $50.  But things didn't end  there.

People went crazy and when all was said and done, it sold for...

$160!!!

Congratulations, eBay!  You've still got it!

(A man in London bought it and already left positive feedback, so the deal is sealed!)

Gotta go now.  Don't forget to check out my store, Bluefrogshoes.com for fab deals on pricey shoes.  Remember: I specialize in hard-to-find sizes, so if you have a problem finding your size, check it out!  If you need tutoring, email me at Bluefrogshoes@live.com.  And if you're interested in reading an awesome newsletter, check out Skip McGrath's!  I've been reading it for years.  Have a good week!

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a Marcato pasta maker purchased for a few dollars and sold for...

Sunday was a very sad day.  One of my idols, Jack Lalanne, left this earth for a better place.  He was 96 years young.

Jack was a macho Richard Simmons.  A pint-sized Superman.  The Tony Robbins of the fitness world.  He practiced what he preached, and for that, he was admired.

Which brings me to today's topic.......

We've always wanted a Thule rack.  Thule racks are roof racks most often seen atop the cars of young, hip families and outdoor enthusiasts.  Actually, it wasn't the rack we were interested in but the cargo box that fits on the rack.  Having a Thule cargo box is like having an extra trunk  We thought it would be great to have one on  long-distance buying trips. There was only one problem -- the price.  When all is said and done, these boxes run about $500 a pop ....and that wasn't gonna happen.

This blog is called The eBay Life and, like Jack Lalanne, I try to practice what I preach.  We're green and we're cheap, so instead of buying a new one, we decided to wait for a bargain to come along.

We thought we were on our way to Thuledom while in Portland, Oregon, last summer.  A friend of ours told us about a store called Rerack. Rerack sells preowned roof accessories.   Unfortunately, they were fresh out of product the day we visited the shop, and we went home disappointed.

But eventually it happened.  One day, as were driving by a used car lot on our way to a yard sale, we saw exactly what we were looking for.  Hanging out atop a beat down mini van was a perfectly good Thule cargo box.  It didn't exactly match the car it was on, but it definitely matched ours!  We screeched on the breaks and turned around.

Using our supersonic powers of negotiation, we convinced the owner of the lot to sell it to us for $100. But there was a problem -- he didn't have the key.   Luckily, he was able to drill out the lock, and we ordered a new one from the manufacturer for only $20.  A Thule cargo carrier that matched our car for the bargain price of  $120?  Now that's more like it!  I would have felt very, very guilty purchasing a new one at the local outdoor store.  Take it from Jack. You've gotta practice what you preach.

So how have your sales been?  Our sales have been good.  Sales have been very good, and we've been scoring quite a bit.  Lately, we have sold a number of Marcato pasta makers.  These pasta machines are hot on eBay!  Always pick them up at yard sales.  The following pasta maker was purchased for a few dollars and eventually sold at auction for......

$56!!!!!

The "Score of the Day" is another blast from the past... (A retro Swatch purchased for 50 cents and sold for...)

On July 4, 2010, we went to a great yard sale and picked up a Swatch for 50 cents.  This is the "Access" Swatch which somehow gave you access to ski resorts (I'm guessing that offer has ended..)  It came with the original box and owner's manual.  Take a look!

Last week we sold it for..........

$26.50.

Not bad!

Score of the Day - 80's Edition

Check it out!  We just purchased three vintage Members Only jackets for $3!!!!  These were purchased at an estate sale, and are in great condition!  The man who owned these definitely took care of his stuff.  (May he rest in peace...)  These are the "cafe racer" style jackets that go for between 20 and 50 dollars depending on the condition.  The leather ones go for much more.

Cha Ching!

Update:  The white one just sold for $29.99!!! It sold to a guy who's attending an '80s party!  He said he owned the exact same one when he was a teen.  (1.18.11)

Update #2:  I bought a burgundy MO jacket a few days later and it sold for $39.99 last week.  (3.3.11)

The eBay Life "Score of the Day" is a Kongtime Dogopolis doggie daycare system purchased for $1 and sold for.....

Watching the news is making me shiver.  Apparently, some areas of the country are covered in snow.  I wouldn’t last long in one of those snowy states because I don’t own a coat.  I don't like them.  They’re bulky, and having to wear one means it’s cold outside….and I don’t like cold.

That’s one of the reasons I no longer live in DC.  I liked DC, but I hated the weather.  It’s interesting because I lived there for more than two years, and I don't remember ever wearing a coat.  If I did, it must have been pretty lightweight because when I hopped on the plane to move back to California, everything I owned fit into a couple of suitcases.

You might be wondering how I survived living in our nation’s capital without owning the proper outerwear.   Well, the Metro, underground shopping malls, and cheap cabs made avoiding the elements relatively easy.

By the way, coats and jackets are very popular on eBay.  We sold quite a few this week. Jackets made by North Face, Patagonia, and REI are always hot.  Columbia is another brand to look out for  --but Columbia jackets have a low resale value, so be sure not to pay too much for them.  Remember:  Just because a product sells for a lot in the stores doesn’t mean it’s worth much on eBay.

Another area of outerwear you might want to explore is leather jackets. Here's one I sold a few months ago.  It was a western-themed jacket made by Chicos, and it only cost me a few bucks.  It was very nice and went for $46!

I’ve sold quite a few contemporary and vintage leather jackets over the years, and when it comes to leather, the funkier the better.

Speaking of funky…..

Last summer we went to a yard sale on a very, very hot day.  All of a sudden, there it was -- the most amazing down jacket in North America.

According to the ladies hosting the sale, the owner of the jacket had purchased it on a trip to Alaska.  It was the thickest jacket I'd ever seen and very versatile -- perfect for snowstorms or a night out on the town.  We bought it for a few dollars and were confident that we would eventually find that special someone who was looking for something truly unique.  Because I didn’t recognize the brand, and I knew I would have to wait for the right buyer to come along, I listed it at a fixed price of $49.99 or best offer.  It sat in my store for quite a while, but a few weeks ago I sold it for $35 -- not bad and we were happy to find it a good home.

Outerwear from the past is also fun to sell.  Just because Nordstrom no longer carries ski jackets with elastic waistbands ala the ‘80s, doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there looking for them.  For example, check out this vintage down jacket from North Face.  I recently sold it for $20 even though it had a stained collar.

Here's an example of something we came across at the local Salvation Army a few weeks ago........

A three-in-one ski outfit!  I can't believe they don't make them anymore.  Pure genius.

So if you're wondering what to sell on eBay in 2011, don't overlook outerwear!  It's easy to find and relatively inexpensive to purchase.

And now for the "Score of the Day".....

A few months ago, Niko's mom picked up a super cool Kongtime Dogopolis doggie daycare unit for $1. She didn't really know what it was, but it certainly looked interesting.  Turns out that this is a very popular device that systematically entertains dogs all day long by throwing out Kong "toys" on a rotating schedule.  These toys are filled with food.

Rumor has it, the company got into trouble for using the term "Kong," and the device is now very hard to find.  I guess "Kong" is too close to "King Kong."  Something like that.

So we did some research and were quite shocked to find out that people are in love with this thing.  We listed it at a fixed price and it sold for..............

$150.  Wow!!!

So be on the lookout for a Kongtime Dogopolis when you're out at the thrift shops.   If you find one, immediately jump for joy.

That's it for today.  But remember:  If you need shoes, check out my eBay store, Bluefrogshoes.com.  For eBay selling tips and tricks and ideas on what to sell, read The eBay Life each and every week.  To become my Facebook friend or follow me on Twitter, click on the links to the right of this post!  If you need tutoring, contact me at Bluefrogshoes@live.com.
